HLT35021 Certificate III in Dental Assisting

The Certificate III in Dental Assisting is a nationally recognised qualification for individuals seeking to work as a dental assistant in a clinical dental practice.

This course provides the knowledge and practical skills required to support dentists and oral health professionals during oral health care procedures. Areas of learning include chairside assistance, dental radiography, infection prevention and control, sterilisation processes, workplace safety and basic dental practice administration.

The course includes practical training and mandatory work placement, allowing students to apply their skills in a real dental setting and meet competency requirements.

Overview

Dental assistants support the delivery of oral health care by assisting during dental procedures and contributing to the safe and effective operation of a dental practice. Typical responsibilities may include:

  • Preparing treatment rooms and assisting during procedures
  • Maintaining infection prevention and control standards
  • Processing and sterilising instruments and equipment
  • Supporting practice administration tasks
  • Working as part of a dental and oral health care team

Work Placement Requirements

To achieve this qualification, students must complete:
50 hours of dental assisting practice in a simulated environment, and
300 hours of dental assisting work in a dental clinic workplace

Work placement is a compulsory component of the course and forms part of the assessment requirements.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements mandated by the training package for this qualification; however, all students may be required to undertake a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment prior to enrolment.

Additional requirements, such as Working With Children Check, immunisation evidence or workplace-specific checks, may be required by host dental practices for work placement.
