Overview
HLTHPS009 Perform Peripheral Intravenous Cannulation is a nationally recognised unit of competency that provides the skills and knowledge required to safely perform IV cannulation in health and emergency care settings.
Training includes:
- Vein assessment and site selection
- Aseptic insertion technique
- Infection prevention and control
- Recognition and management of complications
- In-situ monitoring and maintenance
- Safe removal and post-procedure care
- Clinical documentation
All training is delivered in accordance with training package requirements and current clinical standards.
Duration & Delivery
Training is delivered at DNA Kingston Training facilities in Belmont (Perth) and Bunbury, or onsite at your workplace or client facilities (subject to suitability).
Minimum and maximum participant numbers apply
This course is delivered using a blended learning model:
- Online pre-learning (self-paced theory component)
- Face-to-face practical training (approximately 4–6 hours)
- Additional assessment requirements, which may be completed in a simulated environment and/or workplace setting
Total volume of learning and assessment requirements align with the unit of competency.
Course Outline
Prepare for peripheral intravenous cannulation
- Correctly identify client and authorised request/s for peripheral intravenous cannulation
- Explain procedure to client and obtain consent and check for allergies
- Identify any additional specific requests/tests relevant to the procedure before proceeding
- Ensure client is correctly and comfortably positioned to access the veins
- Work with multidisciplinary team to coordinate activities to ensure they do not impact on peripheral vascular cannulation
- Discuss with parent/carer/staff member appropriate holding and/or distraction technique for a client during cannulation
- Assemble and prepare peripheral intravenous cannulation equipment using standard precautions
- Apply tourniquet/blood pressure cuff to limb, palpate for identification of suitable vein and then release tourniquet/blood pressure cuff
- Prepare and clean insertion site for cannulation
Perform peripheral intravenous cannulation
- Identify own work health and safety (WHS) risks associated with poor posture during procedure and adjust client’s position
- Use aseptic technique to insert peripheral intravenous cannula in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and organisation policies and procedures
- Respond to complications in accordance with organisation policy and procedures and refer client to supervisor
- Dress the site with visibility of cannula entry and secure cannula to limb.
- Date the cannula in-situ dressing site, ensure client is left comfortable and is provided with relevant information and instructions
- Dispose of wastes, taking into account opportunities to address waste minimisation, environmental responsibility and sustainable practice issues
- Document in client’s health information the site of peripheral intravenous cannulation and number of attempts
Monitor peripheral intravenous cannula in-situ
- Assess site and cannula patency regularly in accordance with organisation procedures
- Refer to supervisor or authorised personnel observed indications for cannula removal
- Upon authorised request, remove intravenous cannula, cover insertion site and check bleeding has stopped
Requirements
Entry requirements
Participants will be required to successfully complete an LLN assessment to confirm numeracy, reading, writing and language skills at least to ACSF Level 3 prior to enrolment.
It is a requirements that participants wishing to attend this training be able to:
- Work within a scope of practice that includes IV cannulation
- Be able to participate safely in practical training
Assessment requirements
Assessment methods include:
- Knowledge assessment (online theory + questions)
- Practical skills assessment (observed performance in simulated and/or workplace environment)
In line with training package requirements, participants must demonstrate:
- Preparation of equipment and performance of peripheral IV cannulation for three (3) different clients
- Monitoring one (1) in-situ peripheral IV cannula, documenting assessment of the patency of the cannula and condition of the site.
- Safely removing one (1) peripheral IV cannula
Important: Practical assessment may be conducted in a simulated environment and/or workplace setting, in accordance with training package requirements.
Where workplace assessment is required, it must be completed under supervision of a suitably qualified health professional (e.g. RN, NP, medical practitioner, or paramedic).
Course Outcome
On successful completion of assessments, participants will receive a Statement of Attainment for

Who Is This Course For?
This course is designed for health professionals who perform or are required to perform peripheral IV cannulation as part of their role, including:
- Registered Nurses and Enrolled Nurses
- Paramedics, emergency workers and mine site medics
- Clinical staff working in rural, remote, or resource-limited environments
- Certificate III or IV trained healthcare workers
- Recent Health Graduates
This training provides the skills and knowledge required for basic IV cannulation. Participants must work within a scope of practice that permits IV cannulation.
The ability to perform IV cannulation in a workplace setting is subject to:
- Individual scope of practice
- Employer policies and clinical governance frameworks
- Relevant state/territory legislation
Additional supervised practice may be required prior to independent practice

English requirements
International students are required to have a minimum of IELTS of 6.0 / PTE score of 52, or their equivalent.
DNA Kingston Training assists students with packaging English training if required.
